Benewah County BeFireSafe is a
collaborative
effort supported by your local fire district, the Idaho
Department of Lands and other agencies and concerned citizens.
The program is
funded by various grants in support of the National Fire Plan and
it’s purpose is to implement Benewah County’s
Wildland Urban Interface Fire Mitigation Plan.
The Program
Manager is Steve Bloedel.
BeFireSafe has been in existence since 2005 and many landowners
have worked with the
program to create defensible space around their homes.
The BeFireSafe program is now
taking this work to the next level by making efforts to protect
communities in the wildland-urban interface. Current projects
include the creation of
shaded fuel breaks that cross
multiple ownerships. Many of these fuel breaks will be along
critical access roads within a community. These fuel breaks
not only increase the chance of residents being able to leave an
area safely, but also make it easier and safer for emergency
personnel to do their jobs.
