Boundary County Fire Safe is a county program
funded by various grants in support of the National Fire Plan. The
Boundary County Fire Safe Program has been in existence
since 2003 with Inland Forest Management, Inc. of
Sandpoint contracted to write the County's Fire
Mitigation Plan and to administer the program. The
current Program Manager is Don Gunter.
Fire
Safe has a steering committee called a Wildland Urban
Interface (WUI) Mitigation Committee, with
representatives from various county, state and federal
agencies along with local interest groups. The
purpose of this committee is to coordinate the
implementation of the County's Wildland Urban Interface
Fire Mitigation Plan. This committee meets
quarterly to share information, review activities of the
program, and conduct business as needed.
Since
it's inception in 2003, Boundary County Fire Safe
Projects have created defensible space around hundreds
of homes and fuel breaks near several communities in
Boundary County by reducing hazardous fuels. As an
example, in 2009 nearly 500 acres of fuel break work was
accomplished in priority treatment areas. The
future emphasis for fuel treatment work is to continue
the creation of fuel breaks around our communities at
risk. For further information about the program or
interest in participating, see the contact below or the
