Northwest Management
developed the Shoshone County Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP) in the
summer of 2002. The Interagency Working Group (IWG) comprised of
representation from Shoshone County, U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land
Management, Idaho Department of Lands, Fire Districts and the Mayors of seven
cities participated in the development of the plan, which began implementation
in the fall of 2002. The IWG began developing projects that fell within
the high and moderate risk community areas identified in the CWPP. The IWG
meets bi-monthly for updates and progress reports for each identified project
area and have developed the Shoshone County Wildland Urban Interface (WUI)
Designation map.
The Shoshone County Fire
Mitigation crews are in their fifth season of creating defensible space around
homes and implementing fuel breaks around communities on private property.
To date there have been over 500 acres treated with over 800 structures being
protected by these treatments. The U.S. Forest Service has three projects
in planning stages, one that should begin work on the ground in 2007.
The Bureau of Land Management has five projects of which two are complete.
