Managing your forested lot is important!
Lake Pend Oreille is distinguished as one of the cleanest
big lakes in Idaho. Why? The answer lies within the
heavily forested watershed where waters entering the Lake
originate. The forest assists nature in maintaining water
quality by keeping soil in place, storing nutrients, and
balancing water flows. Also, stream water temperatures are
kept moderate to support healthy fish populations.
The biggest concern
for managing property adjacent to lakes, streams, or wetlands is
the erosion and deposition of soil. The amount of soil
erosion and sedimentation will depend on soil type, steepness of
slopes, pattern of snowmelt, rainfall, and the amount of soil
that has been disturbed or exposed by management activities.
What is Lake*A*Syst?
Lake Assessment System (Lake*A*Syst) is a voluntary program
designed to help you protect Lake Pend Oreille by reducing
pollution risks associated with road building, timber
harvesting, and mechanical site preparation.
