Welcome to the
Lake*A*Syst Program!
Lake*A*Syst
is a public service that provides land use guidance
to shoreline landowners and decision makers, for the
protection of water quality. Our services
include personal consultation and distribution of
materials on lawn and garden management, vegetative
buffer design, aquatic invasive species (Eurasian
watermilfoil), stormwater runoff and erosion, septic
maintenance, and any other water quality concern
that might need to be addressed. Please read
our Shoreline Guidebook
for detailed information on all of these topics. The
Lake*A*Syst program also designs and installs
public demonstration
projects using Best Management Practices
(BMP's).

Why All The
Hubbub?
Our lakefront community is being
developed at an exponential rate and with this development come
water quality issues. Our waters are still clear and
beautiful, but we are starting to see changes... infestations of
Eurasian watermilfoil and algae are at
the top of the list. These issues are being addressed in
multiple ways by multiple organizations.
In 2002 the US EPA implemented a Nutrient Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL)
for the Nearshore Waters of Lake Pend Oreille. This means
under federal regulations, only a certain level of nutrients can
enter the lake. In order to maintain this regulated level of
nutrients a plan needed to be developed. The TMDL
Implementation Plan was completed in 2004 by a committee of the
Tri-State Water
Quality Council.
The plan pinpoints specific action items for Lake Pend Oreille.
Lake*A*Syst is instrumental in fulfilling the on-the ground and
public outreach component of this plan. |
